Non Aqueous Phase Liquid (NAPL) contamination typically exists as a separate organic phase that becomes trapped or sorbed within a given formation. NAPLS have low solubility in water and therefore are not subject to efficient removal by other technologies. As these NAPLS slowly dissolve, they gradually but continually contaminate the subsurface. Some NAPLS also tend to be recalcitrant (resistant) to biodegradation efforts.

BioSolve® strips & desorbs bound up or trapped organic contaminants (NAPL) from the matrix by solubilizing them into a tension reduced spherical micellular emulsion. This results in the removal of 75-99% of the contaminant mass from the matrix depending upon site and contaminant specifics. Additionally, BioSolve® reduces interfacial tensions, thus increasing matrix transmissivity and extraction capabilities at recovery wells. Furthermore, BioSolve®, can enhance the bioremediation of remaining residual organic, if any, by increasing its bioavailability and allowing for an increase in microbial degrader populations.

The BioSolve® process may be implemented in a variety of ways either batch, continuous, or semi continuous depending upon site specifics or as an amendment to existing infrastructures such as under performing pump & treat systems, total fluids extraction / EFR processes, and other NAPL removal/reduction techniques.

The use of BioSolve® is considerably reduces the volume of the water that has to be pumped to remove the contaminant, and increases the effluent contaminant concentration, thereby saving both time and disposal costs.

Unlike many of the base surfactants or "knockoffs" that have seen limited success in liberating only a given fractions of hydrocarbon contamination, The BioSolve® process desorbs and liberates all types and mixtures of LNAPL contamination and furthermore significantly accelerates the attenuation process of any unrecovered residual organic residing within the formation due to well or hydraulic limitations. The Bioremediation enhancement capabilities of BioSolve® have been successfully applied and demonstrated at numerous sites using in-situ & ex situ processes. BioSolve's ability to accelerate NAPL degradation has also been confirmed in a Bioremediation Agent Effectiveness study by The National Environmental Technologies Application Center (NETAC) / University of Pittsburgh, University of CA and Oil industry studies.
